New York City vacation - 2014

I think I've about recovered from my vacation to be able to post about the whirlwind weekend! You know how it is...a few days out of town and it takes a few weeks to recover, what with catching up on housework, laundry, grocery shopping and kid stuff! Here's the (long) story of our trip!

 photo 001_zps6ec6a6dd.jpg

Our day started before dawn, on my 40th birthday, yay! We had a 6:30am flight so we got to the airport in plenty of time. It had been five years since I'd flown and even longer for my husband, so passing through security/the body scanner/liquids in quart bags and all that was interesting. Glad I'd brushed up on all that beforehand by looking at Delta's website, because hubby was clueless to any of these rules.

 photo 003_zpsf645aa40.jpg

The flight was six hours east. I had the middle seat, blah. But everyone had their windows down so they could sleep anyhow. One of the coolest features on the plane was this trip ticker. It showed the plane over a simulated map so we knew where/what we were flying over as well as details about the outside temperature, the speed and the estimated time of arrival. Old hat to most people, but cool beans to us "country mice" who never go anywhere!

I had detailed instructions on an email from my boss about getting to our hotel from the airport and thus, our adventure began.

 photo 008_zpsd82f78dc.jpg

From the air train we transferred to the subway.

A group of kids got on and started playing music and dancing around the poles, that was fun. And it was the least crowded subway we'd see for the rest of the weekend. Getting a seat was nice, that didn't happen very often!

From Grand Central we walked about 8 blocks to the hotel. Isn't this place gorgeous? And it was always busy like this when we went through. They must film all those movie and TV scenes here at 2am or something!

 photo 011a_zps600bd0aa.jpg

 photo 013a_zps47229e41.jpg

That's my husband's elbow in the corner of the shot above. Poor guy, I'd only packed us a carry-on bag because the rolling luggage was too large and we didn't want to have to check luggage. Unfortunately this thing was heavy and he ended up having to carry it to and from the airport and the hotel. He's okay, he's young and strong!

We were starving by this point, having gotten up at 3:45am, shared a bottle of water and a Belvita in the airport and then scarfed down peanuts and Biscoff cookies on the plane. A slice of NYC thin crust was just the ticket. It wasn't the best pizza but by this point we would have eaten cardboard we were so hungry!

 photo 014_zpsa9914a83.jpg

We were staying at the W Hotel, an "intimate" space in mid-town. "Intimate" is code word for tiny. See the bed? You pretty much have to crawl over it to get to the window. But hey, what do we need a big room for? It's the two of us and we weren't here to hang out in the room, we were ready to hit the town.

 photo 015_zpsf6b8edc5.jpg

We headed out to explore the neighborhood. And we had a 7pm dinner reservation at Lavo! It was part of my winner's package, a $250 gift certificate. The restaurant was about a 20 minute walk and along the way we stopped to look inside shop windows and admire the buildings. First thing I noticed about the streets is that nobody waits for the crosswalk light to change, everyone just looks at the direction of the traffic and jaywalks. After a few blocks we got the hang of it too, easy with so many one-way streets. The traffic was never terrible that I noticed. Yes, there were a lot of taxis and yes, a LOT of honking! But we never saw any traffic jams or congestion where we went the entire trip. Still would rather walk and take public transportation though. All the cabs zipping around were wild, I would have been very nervous to drive!

 photo 019a_zpsd5a353a9.jpg

The restaurant was lovely with a bar in front and dining in back. Our servers were wonderful too, very attentive. We thought our guy looked like he could have been Leonardo DiCaprio's brother! They brought us a nice little loaf of garlic bread with marinara on the house and we each ordered a drink. We had a gorgeous plate of meat and cheese for an appetizer (they curled the delicate meats like roses!) and then each ordered a filet with asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes to share. Hello, that was a LOT of food!! Of course we couldn't finish it and Danny took our main and side dishes to-go. Total bill: $196!! Well, when 15 little asparagus are $11 a dish, you know that the dinner bill is going to be high. We tipped nicely and went for a walk.

 photo 021a_zps46e4e3af.jpg
Our pretty appetizer

 photo 022_zpsa56d3bef.jpg

We stopped inside FAO Schwarz, what a cool toy store. Oh how I love my Nerds! But one the size of a cereal box, wow, never saw that before! I certainly could have made a dent in it though...

The following morning we were up early to take the subway to the 9/11 Memorial. Talk about high security, it was like flying again, but we could understand of course. The water features are beautiful and there are kiosks where survivors can look up their lost family members and see a photo and directions on how to find their name on the memorial. We were sorry to have missed the museum but it doesn't open until next year.

 photo 027_zps70e73f0e.jpg

 photo 028a_zpsf5583687.jpg

Unfortunately the memorial has no bathrooms and the closest public restrooms were many blocks away, at Battery Park. That's where we headed, to catch a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty and were fortunate enough to see an Indian wedding celebration (and a horse!).

 photo 038_zps7f74dd03.jpg

We walked a bit into Wall Street and being a Saturday, it was quiet. We took the subway to Times Square. I think I'd be more impressed at night with everything lit up. We worked our way back to the hotel, through Rockefeller Center, past Radio City Music Hall and stopping occasionally to window shop.

 photo 063a_zpsb3d1c79f.jpg

If you know my husband you know he's not shy. One of my favorite parts of the trip is that my husband wanted to have his picture taken with every police officer he saw. And not one of them every rolled their eyes at him or gave him a hard time. They just wanted to know where we were from and if we were having a good time. Walking by Saint Patrick's Cathedral we saw a group of construction workers near their trailer. Danny asked if he could have a picture with them and explained that he also worked construction, mostly military jobs in California, which they thought was cool. These guys were so funny and showed us inside the church where some major reconstruction is being done.

 photo 067a_zps59ea13f9.jpg
"Jerry! Get off the phone Jerry! Someone wants to take a pitcha!" (see Jerry there, trying to hide his phone!)

I never felt uncomfortable or nervous walking in the city, even at night. We were always surrounded by lots of people and we could always find someone to assist us. When we were looking for a place to eat dinner the following night, a nice man and his friend directed us to a great Irish pub with fantastic burgers and shoestring potatoes. When we were wandering around after the High Line, a young man and his wife showed us where Chelsea Market was. When we couldn't find the subway entrance to get to Times Square, a lady (finally someone with a classic NY accent!) directed us.

 photo 086_zpse1b32851.jpg

But the best help was our concierge in the W Hotel. I can't recall his name but nearly every time we went in or our of the hotel, he was standing in the lobby with a warm hello or good evening. The first night Danny cut his ear shaving and this man quickly fetched antiseptic and a bandage. He was great with assisting us each day to point us in the right direction. And after a lengthy nap (all that walking tired us out!), he told us it was not too late to see a bit of Central Park.

It was about 20 minutes to get there and we were able to walk in the park for about a half-hour before the sun started to dip. My mother-in-law had given us specific instructions NOT to be in park after dark, so we obliged with her wishes and walked back out. I would have enjoyed exploring there a bit more, it looked so beautiful, having the greenery and trees set against the backdrop of skyscrapers.

 photo centralpark_zps60729e1d.jpg

After burgers and beer for dinner (and great conversation with the adorable couple from Connecticut that sat next to us) we had ice cream from Walgreens in bed and went to sleep, feet throbbing! Boy, we sure did walk a lot that day.

 photo 079a_zpsc023434a.jpg

The next morning was our spa pampering at Bliss. Danny got a massage and I had a facial, so lovely. For lunch we headed back to Lavo. The accommodating manager had told us we could use the balance of our certificate and he even comped us each a drink! We headed back out for walking, visiting the High Line, eating handcrafted coconut milk popsicles, and walking through Chelsea. Loved all the stoops, we had to stop for a picture!

 photo a090_zps9324b828.jpg

Please ignore the dorky ensemble of dressy top, sweater (now around my neck because I was warm), jeans and sneakers. I was going for comfort at this point!

 photo 104_zpsa843b16c.jpg

In all, it was a fantastic trip and a totally new experience for us. I liked the busyness, that never bothered me. I liked to see how much New Yorkers loved their city and were always interested in helping you get where you needed to go so you could enjoy their city! We were told that we were experiencing the best weather week of the entire year! Back home it was over 100 degrees so we were happy to have comfortable sight-seeing weather, especially when walking so much!

 photo 116_zps8e437bb9.jpg
Some of the subway stops had really intricate tile murals

Public transportation (despite being filthy!) was really well-operated and surprisingly easy to navigate (except on Sunday getting back to the airport, when some of the trains were not operating!). The girls in NYC wear some terribly impractical shoes. Either flat sandals or sky-high stilletos! It was Fashion Week so we did see lots of 6' tall models in little skirts and wild shoes!
Such a fun trip and a lovely vacation with my husband, thank you again Armitron!

The Big 4-0 in NYC

You might recall a few months ago when I won this trip to NYC from Armitron watches.

Well, the time has come!!

 photo JULIE2_zps554648ed.jpg

We leave tomorrow morning, bright and early, on what happens to be my 40th birthday.

 photo JULIE3_zps927d6393.jpg

 photo julie4yrs_zps7ecb65f4.jpg

I know some other women dread this milestone, but I honestly have no worries about turning 40. Yeah, I have to color my hair every six weeks. I don't get carded anymore. Whatever. Okay, so things are a bit squishier in the middle than I'd like. That's life. I don't mind getting older, as long as getting "wiser" comes along with it.

Fifth grade, guessing I was around 10

In any case, my birthday will be spent flying to New York City with my husband, walking the city streets and enjoying a lovely dinner at Lavo. Over the weekend we will be touring the 9/11 Memorial site, walking through Central Park and getting pampered at Bliss Spa.

I'm excited, of course. A chance to celebrate a milestone with new adventures! Happy Birthday to me!!

My days

My days lately have been filled from top to bottom with STUFF to do. A lot of running around in circles, it seems. Before I blow my top, I am stopping to remind myself to step back, breathe and just take each day as it comes. But I am looking forward to a small break.

This is my life...goofball photo 1081737_10201679764259357_754729385_n.jpg
I'm not the only one going a little nutty, I guess!

It's still summer vacation for the kids so I'm thankful for not having homework to deal with. I don't have to pack lunches or go though paperwork yet (sorry to those across the country who have kids that have already returned to school!). My kids don't start back up until Labor Day.

Might have put on too much sunscreen. photo 973140_10201292780825013_833766333_n.jpg
Dad might have put on too much sunscreen...

I am thankful that the weather has stayed relatively cool after some very hot days earlier in the summer. We don't have air conditioning, so keeping the house cool is paramount! Particularly thankful for ceiling fans in each bedroom and we run them on low all night long.

 photo 007_zpsde3c0b91.jpg
Saturday in the city

Having a yard to play in and a place to go sit outside has me so happy. I certainly don't miss apartment living, where the kids could only play in the parking lot. At least here they can play on the patio and run around on the dirt patch. Hopefully soon we'll have some landscaping back there too. I have plans, I tell you...plans!

we are going to the Padres game! photo 1079429_10201678613910599_1894132257_n.jpg
Took the afternoon off to take my boy to a baseball game

I am thankful for my little flower garden, that has already brought me so much joy with minimal amount of work! My gladiolas bulbs are flowering and I've been decorating the dining room table with fresh clippings for weeks. They have really brightened up the yard and the house.

 photo 009_zps8259a7d8.jpg

I am so happy with the contest wins I've had these past few months. Last week I got a delivery of Jane Iredale make up and skincare that I've had a great time testing out! I won that with my What Summer Means to Me judged Pinterest Board.

Thank you jane jane iredale - THE SKIN CARE MAKEUP for the fantastic Pinterest prize! I received it in the mail yesterday and can't wait to play with it. photo 992178_10201744334753579_1773142496_n.jpg

I got an email from Kohls last week about a $100 store gift card random draw win from a Pinterest entry (great, because I shop at Kohl's all the time!). Mariposa sent me a surprise runner's up prize, what a lovely treat! I also heard from KraftMaid that I won their Return to Your Roots Pinterest contest, which is a $500 Visa gift card. That will come in very handy when Danny & I go to NYC next month on the trip I won from Armitron! *wink* I appreciate the creative outlet that Pinterest allows me and so thankful to the various judges that have chosen my board as their favorite in these contests. I am so grateful that they see my art and the hard work that has gone into my boards.

what a wonderful surprise! just received this lovely tea light holder from Mariposa for being a runner up in the Pinterest contest. thank you so much! photo 1080887_10201692519538231_266054316_n.jpg
My gift from Mariposa

I'm always every so grateful for my parents and mother-in-law who step in and take care of my children when I can't. I wish that we were in a position where I could be present more and take care of the kids 24/7 but right now, if they have to be away from me, I'm so glad they can be with the kids.

 photo 024_zpseeeaa3af.jpg
A view of the city

I'm grateful that my husband is working and making a good salary. What I'm not so pleased about is his 3-4 hour round trip drive every day out of the county, his having to wake at 3:30am and not get home until nearly 7pm, the six-day work weeks and the fact that he pretty much eats dinner and falls asleep on the sofa, exhausted, every night. I miss him (and I miss the help around the house with the kids!).

 photo 022_zps009b30f6.jpg
On the ferry from San Diego to Coronado

Happy that we live within walking distance of a great park. I am able to walk the kids there and let them play in the evenings. It takes us about 20 minutes to get there. And there is a Mexican shop, where we stopped for a quick dinner the other night for rolled tacos and horchata.

!Horchata! photo 1167755_10201734567469403_1792777773_n.jpg

I am so glad that my dad is turning the corner in his illness and has begun to get his appetite back and his symptoms are leveling out. He has renal (kidney) cancer throughout his body and after some tense moments earlier in the year (transient stroke and pneumonia, both requiring separate hospitalizations) he is on a new medication. He has some nasty side effects, one being loss of appetite and nausea. When your 6' tall father weighs as much as your own 5'2" frame, that is a problem. But my mom said he's feeling like eating now and has been regaining some strength, which is wonderful to hear.

Finally, I am thankful for next week, when I will have a bit of time off to spend with the kids. Not sure what I'll do with them yet, but I'm hoping for something FUN!!

Two fun wins!

Last Saturday two of my recent Pinterest wins came in the mail...it was like Christmas in July!

First up, from the King's Hawaiian Brings Us Together contest. Here is my winning board.

I was one of five winners, announced on their blog. I won a year's worth of King's Hawaiian bread (sent in coupons that can be used at the grocery store) as well as a $100 gift certificate to use in their online shop. So far we have just eaten the slices straight from the bag (they are THAT good!), we took a package of rolls to a party (where they promptly disappeared), we have served hot dogs with their buns and we made the best French Toast ever! Seriously, we made an entire loaf of French Toast last night for dinner and there wasn't a bit leftover. It doesn't even need butter, it was so yummy with just a drizzle of agave nectar.

 photo 001_zps8cb5723a.jpg

 photo 002_zpsd534900f.jpg

 photo 003_zps898d2fa4.jpg

Thank you King's Hawaiian, my family is loving having the constant stock of your bread in our kitchen (it doesn't last long, let me tell you!).

And then a sweet bag of joy, from the Tea Collection. I've admired their clothes for years but never got a chance to try them out...until now! I was one of three winners in the Celebrating Summer with Tea contest, my winning board here. Their announcement here. I was able to choose $148 worth of clothes to divide between the three kids. The Boy got three tees, Baby D got two and The Girl chose two dresses and a pair of cropped leggings.

 photo 007_zps0ac6c8f9.jpg

 photo 005_zpsc1c5bb36.jpg

I will have to take some shots of the kids wearing them. I chose this awesome panda tee for The Boy. He couldn't contain a smile when he saw it and it's in his favorite color. The Girl loved this lovely dress which she said reminded her of origami.

Thank you again Tea Collection. Now that I have the clothes in hand, I know I'll be back for more! The quality is wonderful and styles are so unique and creative...definitely not what you see every other kid wearing, which I love.

A bite of the Big Apple

I didn't have much time to linger on the loss of our Disney World trip that was never meant to be this year before something pretty exciting came along!

I received an email last week saying that I was the grand prize winner of the Armitron Mother's Day Contest on Pinterest!!

Here is my winning Pinterest board.

It's for a whirlwind weekend trip to New York City, a stay at the W Hotel, $250 at Lavo restaurant and $300 at Bliss Spa. OH MY GOODNESS, I cannot wait!!

If you have a suggestion for a must-do in the city, let me know. I'm not sure how much we can squeeze in a fast few days, but we're going to try and do a lot!

Barn Light Electric - A Pinterest Contest Win!

I won a contest!

And not just any contest, this one was a judged Pinterest contest that required creativity and time to get it just right. I won $550 worth of lighting and accessories from Barn Light Electric.

I found the contest on Sweeps Advantage and pinned my dream home ideas along with Barn Light Electric's lovely vintage-style fixtures. You can see my pin here (if you are Pinterested).

Everyone who has contacted me from the company has been so incredibly sweet and practically as excited as I am! They even had their blog writer contact me with questions for a blog feature you can read here.

I received a message from them with details on what I won:

Indoor/Outdoor Wall Sconce

Schoolhouse Pendant Light

Set of 4 Enamelware cups

House numbers in white

Edison spiral light

Still figuring out exactly where we are going to install the lighting. The wall sconce will go outside on the patio for sure. We are anxious to get that area looking good so we can host some summer parties in a few months.

Not sure about the placement of the Schoolhouse pendant. Ideally I'd want it over the kitchen sink but the tile in there would really clash with the pretty jadeite stripe. Think I can talk Danny into ripping out the yellow/brown/green glass tile and putting in something else to match my lovely new lamp? Probably not!

The enamelware cups are so cute and we'll probably use them at the dinner table for the kid's milk. Our current house numbers are black so I think the white numbers they are sending will stand out better. Can't wait to put more character on the front of the house, it's currently really really boring! And isn't that Edison lightbulb great?!

I am so excited to receive my box of goodies. I'll be sure to share once we have things installed too!

Maybe You Never Knew...I enter contests

I have updated this post and have it featured on my new blog SAVING UP FOR DISNEY.

Back when I was a girl (long before the internet, of course) my dad would occasionally receive a newsprint mailer that had national contests. I was intringued by the thought of possibly winning a vacation, cash, even a car. I recall a few times, filling out postcards with the contest addresses as per the instructions and sending them off in the mail, fingers crossed. I never won anything, of course.

When I was in high school my dad won a contest in the newspaper to name a casino in Las Vegas. He was one of many who chose the name ("Excalibur") and was awarded a weekend stay at the new hotel and my mom and he got all their meals for free. That was fun!

I've been pretty lucky through the years, winning a savings bond at my school's grad night party, had my name pulled from the barrel of thousands at the mall when Wheel of Fortune did a casting call (I made it on the show!) and most recently won a $50 Macy's gift card, San Diego Safari Park tickets and an overnight weekend at the Disneyland Resort complete with 2-day park tickets for all four of us.

Us, on the recent Disney trip that I won!

My motto: Someone has to win, why not me?

You know, you can't win if you don't play. I am by no means a professional at this and there are many websites that will go into more detail but this is how I do it:

At least once a week, I do an internet search for contests that sound interesting to me and load the links into an email that I send to myself. There are websites that list tons of contests in a directory like Sweepstakes Advantage and About.com These are the two I use most. I like to look for specific contests too, like travel to Walt Disney World, and I find Disney-themed contest on Mousesavers.

I don't really enter contests with prizes I don't want or need.

I do "like" certain companies on Facebook that run frequent promotions and then check their sites to see when they start new contests.

I also follow blogs that I enjoy reading and enter their contests as well. I won a gift certificate last year to Party Box Design on a blog and was able to get the baby's birthday invitations designed for free. Some blogs have more complicated entry processes like tweeting, following their Pinterest boards, liking them on Facebook and others only require a simple comment.

I like Pinterest contests and essays best because they take a certain creativity. The Ellen Show frequently has essay contests with fantastic prizes. I made it to the top 20 of a recent Pinterest contest to win a Whirlpool fridge!

Reading the fine print:

Read those Official Rules. Really. At least the parts that tell you how many times you can enter, how long the contest lasts, how the winners will be contacted and what it is exactly that you're entering to win.

Pay attention to how many times you can enter. I steer away from contests that tell me I can enter "up to 100 times a day". 'Ain't nobody got time for that! I prefer contests that only allow one entry per person/email address. This really evens the playing field.

Look at the starting and ending dates of the contest. Try and get in on the beginning of the contest if you are able to enter once a day to give you the best odds. I've entered every single day for the HGTV Dream Home contest; technically twice, because they let you enter at both HGTV.com and Frontdoor.com. They also offer a flooring contest from Lumber Liquidators & another for a GMC vehicle. I entered them all, every day of the contest so my odds are as great as they can possibly be! Of course, I'm in the mix with millions of others, but remember, someone has to win! Why not me? (or you!)

Some contests will ask for a code or something from a proof of purchase but there are often alternate ways of obtaining the entry (some as easy as just clicking a link that will supply you with a code without a purchase).

Watch those clickable boxes at the end of the entry form! If you don't want to receive a bunch of unwanted spam or junk mail or accidentally sign up for something you don't want (like a magazine subscription). Make sure you know what you've clicked (sometimes the boxes are already clicked and you need to unclick them each time).

Find your favorite stores and internet shops on Facebook and Pinterest and see if they are running any online contests.

Magazines often have contests or sweepstakes so a quick online search of your favorites should let you know what is available to enter.

Your local radio station probably has call-in contests (that's how I won the $50 Macy's card) but they often have online sweepstakes as well (that's how I won the Disney trip!).

Blogs are great place to enter and depending on the number of readers/entrants, the odds can be pretty good! Just over the weekend, I won a bottle of cleaner for stainless steel appliances and a microfiber cloth from Tidy Mom. We don't have stainless steel appliances in our apartment but our new house does *wink!*.

Last of all, good luck! Be consistent with your entering, have fun and have hope. Don't get discouraged if you don't win anything. I enter hundreds of contests and have only won a handful but I have my fingers crossed for a big one someday!
