I saw it on Pinterest - Sesame Street Party

While planning Baby D's second birthday party, Pinterest came in handy with lots of ideas for his Sesame Street party theme. I wanted it cute. I wanted it simple. I wanted it fun. And I wanted it cheap!

I started a party board for him about six months ahead of time to glean ideas. There were so many cute things I'd have liked to do but didn't want to pour too much money into decorations. I did purchase a few packages of pipe cleaners at the dollar store which entertained the kids with twisting and creating for much longer than I expected!

Elmo inspiration (wow, isn't that a fun table!).

One thing I've learned over the years is to put money and/or work into things that guests will actually notice. Why buy cute but pricy tablecloths if you are going to cover them with your lunch spread? Or expensive plates with Elmo's face when they're just going to get ranch dip all over them?!

I bought dollar-store tablecloths and then cut a strip of leftover wrapping paper for a simple and colorful table runner. Cheap...and my guests actually commented on how clever the idea was.

I pumped up about 12 balloons that I had on hand and tied them with curling ribbon to the posts of our patio. At the end of the party we cut them down and gave them to the youngest party guests to take home with them.

Another thing I've learned over the years is to use what you have on hand and from around the house. This dessert table was decorated with a standing Tickle Me Elmo doll that we already had. I used a silver tiered tray from my dining room table for holding cupcakes. And because all I had were glass trays that I didn't want to get knocked off the table, I decided just to spread the Elmo-breadmen directly onto the table.

And honestly, don't spend a ton of time making elaborate desserts because frankly, kids don't care! Truly, they just want to EAT it! So if you want to make it cute just know your efforts are only for the grown ups who will ooh and ahhh over the sweetness. Seriously, do not mess around with rolling out fondant or taking an hour to painstakingly decorate one sugar cookie that will get devoured in 3.2 seconds. Know your audience; Kids will not appreciate the time or effort you put into the treats, they just want them in their bellies!

Drooling in anticipation!

I made a simple chocolate cake from a box mix, smeared on leftover cream cheese frosting and tossed some colorful sprinkles on the top. Super easy. If I'd had time I would have made one of these fun banners for the top but alas, I was actually still frosting the cake as my guests were arriving!

Pinterest inspiration

I did spend more time than usual making these Elmo-breadmen cookies because I knew that they kids would adore them.

Elmo-breadmen!

I already had the dough premade and frozen so it just took defrosting, rolling out and baking. Royal icing is a bit more work but I'd already had it made (you can keep it for about a month) so I just had to mix the three colors. I made it into flood icing as per Sweet Sugar Belle's instructions and using a squeeze bottle method I had these fuzzy red guys made in no time, with different expressions to boot! If you do make decorated cookies take my advice and break up the work. Make the dough one day. Roll out and bake the cookies another day. Decorate them the day before the party (or even earlier and just freeze them until the day before the event). These cookies are oversized and were taking up a lot of icing which is why I just outlined the bodies and filled in the icing on the head. Nobody complained and the cookies were gone in a flash!

I also knew that Baby D was going to need a coordinating outfit and well, since that is sort of "my thing" I whipped him up an appliqued tee with Elmo! He was totally delighted. If you need your own Elmo tee, I *ahem* sell it in my Etsy shop!

Happy #2 Baby D!

Here are the Cookie Monster Cupcakes that I saw on Pinterest.

My version

I was not going to pipe frosting onto these, I didn't have time for that. I simply colored store-bought cream cheese frosting with a few drops of blue gel coloring and then patted the frosting on with an angled mini spatula to make it look fluffy. Mini Chips Ahoy cookies were simply shoved into the mouth position. The tutorial I saw on Pinterest had the baker cutting out a little section from the cupcake to insert the cookie but I didn't have any issues with just pushing the cookie down into the cupcake and none of them popped out. I found the premade sugar eyes here. Ta-da, super cute! I made them with a Blue Velvet Cake mix and with a slight blueberry flavor, they were yummy. The kids and grown ups loved them!

Finally, I kept goodie bags simple and only for the littlest guests. A simple pack of crayons and Sesame Street stickers from the dollar bin inside red & white striped paper bags (I bought a pack from Pick Your Plum and used the rest for Christmas treats). I wrapped them in a bit of twine and they were just precious.

There you have it, my Pinterest-inspired Sesame Street party. To reiterate, use what you have, keep your audience in mind when party planning and spend money and time only where it's most noticed. Simple, fun and cheap! But still cute too, of course.

it's a small world...after all!

001-24

Can I just start off by saying how much it broke my heart to see how unfocused my photos were? I'm not kidding, when I got home after the end of the long party day and uploaded these, I wanted to cry.

013-13

They didn't look blurry at all when they were 1.5" thumbnails on my camera display. The disappointment of working for a month on something and then not have anything to show for memento, what a bummer!

007-31

And because I had the camera around my neck and was so busy with cooking/baby wrangling/opening gifts/handing out cake, I didn't get to take as many photos as I would have liked. Did a take any photos of the paper decorations I so carefully crafted by hand? No. Did I get any snapshots of the party guests? Nope. Did I even get a decent photo of the birthday boy in his custom appliqued attire? Nopety-nope. sigh...Next time I need to remember to hand my camera off to someone else!

010-22

Oh, well, now that I have that off my chest, here is what I have to share of Baby D's "it's a small world" themed birthday party!

005-25

The party was a success! We had 23 adults and 17 kids in my parent's yard. Fortunately it was a gorgeous day and the weather was perfect for an outdoor party! My dad hung the paper decorations I'd made outside, one from the tree and the other two dangled from under the eaves of the house (you'll have to use your imagination on this but in my opinion they looked wonderful!).

We served rotisserie chicken, a homemade baked macaroni and cheese, potato salad, mixed green salad and corn bread for lunch. The yellow cupcakes had chocolate frosting and adorable paper flags.

003-23

I made sugar cookies and iced them the night before. I bought sweet little pastel colored candies to accent the center of each whimsical flower.

015-21

I set up all the desserts on one table (the area with zero light apparantly, since all my photos came out looking like my hands were shaking when I took them, blah!).

006-30

I crafted paper pinwheels out of scrapbook paper and hung them with twine from atop the buffet.

008-21

We lined up the parade of handpainted (by me) wooden characters along the dessert table and each child was able to choose their favorite to take home with them. This was a very popular party favor, I think!

004-23

On the opposite wall, I strung twine and used tiny wooden clothespins to display some of Baby D's photos. So great to see how much his sweet face has changed over the year!

012-12

I freehand iced the top of the cake with the friendly face from the clock on the ride at Disneyland.

024-11

040-4

Baby D loved when we all sang to him. We'd been practicing it for weeks at home so he'd get used to the song.

037-7

He even did his "twinkle twinkle" fingers along with the singing, so cute!

044-4

And the cake? Well it was a white cake that I colored and made with a rainbow technique. Quite easy to do and everyone was wild about it! There was not one slice of cake left. I'll have to do a tutorial!

046-9

As you can see, Baby D loved his slice too!

060-4

061-8

Thank you to everyone who came out and enjoyed our son's special day with him!

Celebration Blend

Whew, what a whirlwind last few weeks! I have neglected this poor blog with all of our Anniversary/Thanksgiving/Birthday activities!

Sewed up this little turkey for my turkey to wear on Thanksgiving day. He had it drooled on in 2.2 seconds! I'll make a separate Thanksgiving post.

005-4

Finished painting these characters, do you recognize them? These were party favors at Baby D's birthday. I'll do a separate post with the festivities.

Just when I thought I was done with Etsy orders, three more hit! I actually turned off my Etsy store for the month so I can catch up and then maybe get to sewing a few things for my kids for Christmas.

Got the party menu planned out with Danny. We settled on rotisserie chicken, homemade baked mac & cheese, green salad and corn bread. Simple food in the days after Thanksgiving when everyone is "turkey'd out". I baked the cakes and cupcakes on Saturday afternoon and then decorated on Sunday morning. I had leftover royal icing the fridge so I made cookies too.

I also needed to whip up something cute for him to wear to his party! I had hoped to do a fun pair of appliqued overalls but that was sooooo not going to happen in the short amount of time. However I still had time to make him a simple appliqued tee with his name on it. I never got a decent shot of him in it on his birthday...I think I'll need to have a mini-photo session!

The weekend before my honey and I celebrated our anniversary a few days early with lunch and a movie. It had been so long since my husband had been to a movie theatre, he couldn't remember when it was. We were actually thinking the last time was the day after we got married (two years ago!). We had a gift card to P.F. Changs so that took care of lunch (free!). And I had (free!) movie tickets from I-don't-know-when so that was our entertainment. So apparantly I'm a cheap date and my husband loves that about me! We had a wonderful time and it was the first time we'd been out on a date without the baby in a year.

We can't wait that long to have a date night again... After the last few weeks, we need another evening out!

Feeling FREE -Birthday planning on a budget

Now that Halloween is over, I have a few other important matters to attend to this month.

Thanksgiving is still two weeks ago but I would like to make my little turkey an appliqued turkey shirt. I have the pieces cut, just need to iron the fabric and sew it up.

My anniversary is November 20th so the weekend before we'll probably go out to dinner and a movie. I have a P.F. Changs gift card so I think there are lettuce wraps in our future (free dinner!). We want to see Lincoln and I have two movie gift certificates that I've been hoarding (free entertainment!). Also I won a $40 Macy's gift card on the radio so maybe we can do that too (free shopping!). Sounds like my husband's kind of night...free, free, free!!

And of course, at the end of the month we celebrate Baby D's first birthday!!

Need to confirm again the location since I think I asked my mom six months ago if we could have the party at her house. Mom, is that still okay? *hee-hee*

Now, I could really pull out all the stops if it was actually me that was completely in charge. But my husband wants to keep costs at a minimum which I completely understand. And working on a budget also means being more creative in the process, which is totally okay.

However, creative also takes time, of which I'm in short supply of around here. It's hard to see some really fun ideas and not be able to attempt them because I just simply don't have the time. But I am going to still do SOME fun things, just because that's how I roll...It would drive me nuts not to!

Last week, I pulled out old scrapbook paper and the circle cutter and spent an evening catching up on The Middle OnDemand and cutting circles. I zipped them through the sewing machine over the weekend and got a lovely strand of softly colored dots (free decorations!).

I have the paper to make these strip paper decorations too, just need to cut them out!

In keeping with the It's a Small World theme for his party, I picked up these wooden doll figures from Etsy with the idea of painting each one to represent a Disney character from around the world. Some will be Disney characters from the movies and some will be representations of the dolls from the ride. I want to decorate the dessert table with the dolls and then give them away to the kids as a party favor.

Box o' Paints

I have an equal number of boy and girl dolls but of course some of the "boy" dolls could just be a girl wearing pants! Of course, I have more boys coming to the party since boys outnumber the girls greatly in our family, so some of the boys will just have a girlie doll, I guess? Hope they don't mind! And $20 total for a combination of party decor and favor and the kids will get to take home a quality, one-of-a-kind gift instead of plastic stuff that will be lost under the bed. $20, not exactly free, but surprisingly cheaper than plastic stuff!

The older kids and I sat around the dining room table one night wracking our brains to come up with ideas for the dolls.

This is the list so far (we have 16 spots to fill):
Lilo (from the movie Lilo & Stitch) - Hawaii
Pinocchio - Italy
Merida (from the movie Brave) - Scotland
Woody & Jessie (from Toy Story...and Jessie wears pants!) - USA
Alice (from Alice & Wonderland) - England
Belle (from Beauty & the Beast, wearing her provincial outfit, not the yellow ball gown) - France
Aladdin & Jasmine, another pants wearer! - India
Mulan - China

And then just thinking of the ride, The Boy mentioned the African drummer boy and his favorite, the Canadian Mountie, so those will be good for boys.

The Girl shouted, "Buzz Lightyear!" but I had remind her that he's from outer space, not the small world. "Oh yeah...", she said.

Then the question came up...where is Snow White from? My guess would be Germany. And what about Cinderella? Would you say she's from England? I'd guess that based on what her prince wears. Deep thoughts...

Got the first one done last night, do you know who it is? The kids recognized her immediately, thank goodness!

After the dolls are done, my next project will be to take photos of Baby D for his invitation. I'm not going to print them out or mail anything this year, I never get an RSVP that way. I'll just use an online invite so people can RSVP immediately but I want to add a picture of him to it and also print them up wallet sized for favors to our party guests.

And I LOVE this idea of a poster board that looks like a chalkboard with all his favorites, what a special memory. Poster board is pretty cheap, wonder if I have anything already laying around? Nothing black I think, but I do have the metallic markers already so I'm half-way there!

First year poster board

I plan on making a photo collage of him, one picture for each month using scrapbook paper and some number stickers that I already have (free!). The numbers look very much like the ones on the clock, perfect!

Photo collage idea

That's about it for decorating. Next planning step, food and dessert. My husband absolutely wants to be involved in that one. I'm thinking we'll be having slow-cooker bbq pork sandwiches which is just fine by me!

And I'll be making a cake with a happy clock face for sure!

Party Planning {Handcrafted Paper Decorations} -The Big ONE

So in less than two months, my little guy will be turning ONE!

Of course, I'm already party planning!

Duh, been doing that for months already, pinning cool ideas. But now it's time to move into action and start the actually hands-on creating.

My big 10 month old boy!
In between sewing up a million of these that I've gotten orders for from Etsy...

And between getting the Halloween costumes done...

A little costume hint...

I'm planning on making a few very easy decorations for the party. Something cute and practical that can be reused for the next party, for sure. And I plan on keeping the buying to a minimum (my husband thanks me for that!), so I'll mostly be using what I have on hand.

I have large stacks of cute scrapbook paper in storage at my mom's house, so I'm going to haul that out next week and see what I have to work with.

Here are a few of the paper projects that I hope to try my hand at:

A banner for the cake

Mini pinwheel decorations

What about these little pinwheels attached to clothespins? These would be sweet clipped to the top of a favor bag

These paper strip mobiles look easy, huh?

Definitely want a display of Baby D's photos through the year, this banner is the start of a good idea.

Another fun one, just need to get a circle cutter though...

This one would need a circle cutter too...

And more circles...

These stars could be reused for Christmas decorations too

Well now, that's about the cutest thing ever!! I love the wavy flags!

Okay, so it looks like I should have been getting ready for this, oh, maybe back in February, right?! I'll start working on it next week for sure. And probably teaching the older kids how to use a circle cutter!
